Student Bar Association Committee Descriptions
Executive Council Committees
Appropriations Committee – Christopher Cleaveland, SBA Treasurer – E-mail
The Appropriations Committee is primarily designed to manage the Phoenix Grant Budget Hearings in the Fall Semester. Accordingly, the committee also meets to discuss emergency funding requests and the creation of new programs under the office of the Treasurer. The Appropriations Committee voting members consist of two rising second year students and two rising third year students. The Treasurer acts as chair of the committee and shall not have a vote, except in the event of a tie. All decisions by the Appropriations Committee are subject to SBA Congress’ approval.
Rules/Governance Committee – Chad Hinton – E-mail
Shall aid the SBA in developing and reviewing the Constitution and Bylaws. This includes drafting new provisions as suggested by the SBA or as the committee sees fit. This committee may also be used as a resource for the SBA in helping to interpret the SBA Constitution, bylaws, or the Honor Code if necessary.
Elections Committee – Jameson Marks – E-mail
Shall set the guidelines for all SBA elections including campaign regulations and election dates subject to majority approval of the SBA Congress and the SBA Constitution and Bylaws. The Election Committee shall oversee the Spring election and the following academic year’s Fall election. Also, the Election Committee is responsible for working with the SBA and Honor Council in developing any procedures needed to ratify or amend the Constitution or Honor Code.
Academic Council Committees
Admissions Committee – Sarah Neely – E-Mail
Shall work in conjunction with the Admissions office to improve and offer continuous feedback to the Admissions process. Shall assist with Admissions events when necessary and provide input as a focus group.
Curriculum Committee – Bernie Brown – E-Mail
The role of the Curriculum Committee is to represent the students’ interest in the development of the curriculum at Elon Law. They should work closely with the faculty curriculum committee to accomplish this task.
Leadership Committee – Stephen Shaw – E-Mail
Shall work in conjunction with administration and faculty to continue to develop Elon Law’s national model of engaged learning and the leadership component that is emphasized at Elon Law. This includes working with the Center of Engaged Learning and Leadership (CELL) as well as other facets of Elon Law where leadership can be emphasized.
Faculty Relations Committee – Drew Nettleman – E-Mail
Shall serve as a liaison between the Elon Law faculty and the Elon Law student body. Shall provide constructive input and ideas from the student body to the Faculty Committee and shall relay Faculty Committee decisions to the student body. This committee also serves to assist in the visiting and interviewing process and by providing general student body input to the administration to ensure that Elon Law retains the best faculty possible.
External Relations Council Committees
Alumni Relations Committee – Leslie Price – E-Mail
The Alumni Relations Committee shall serve as the liaison between Elon Law and Alumni. A central goal of the group will be to ensure that Law Alumni are active and contributing members of Elon Law. The group will work closely with the Law School Development Alumni Relations staff, as well as the University Alumni Relations Office on main campus.
Bar Association Liaisons – David Stephens – E-Mail
Shall meet regularly with community Bar Association contacts to plan opportunities and networking between Elon Law and the Bar Associations. Bar Associations include the Greensboro Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Career Services Relations Committee – Gavin Painter – E-Mail
Shall work in conjunction with Elon Law Career Services staff to provide the best possible career, internship, networking, and learning opportunities for Elon Law students.
Community Relations Committee – Erika Hamby – E-Mail
The Community Relations Committee was established to aid the SBA and all of Elon Law in strengthening the relationship between the Elon University School of Law and the local, regional and national community. This includes public relations and communications, community service and any other method to better foster the relationship between Elon Law and the community.
Fundraising Committee – Danny Donovan – E-Mail
The Fundraising Committee shall assist the SBA in acquiring funds to support activities and other programs that assist students in their day to day life as a law student.
Main Campus Relations – David Morrow – E-Mail
Shall work with various departments at the law school and at Elon’s main campus to ensure smooth relations and various opportunities for students at Elon’s main campus. Shall assist in notifying Elon Law students of events on main campus (athletic and cultural events, concerts, etc) and shall assist in the process of obtaining tickets to those events. Shall develop ideas to further increase relations between the law school and main campus.
Preceptor Advisory Committee – Adam Arthur – E-Mail
Shall provide input and assist in planning the Preceptor program; shall work in conjunction with Career Services staff and the Career Services Relations Committee to use the Elon Law Preceptor program to the fullest extent possible.
Student Life Council Committees
Intramurals Committee – Brack Massey – E-Mail
Shall serve the student body by seeking out and promoting the opportunity to take part in intramural activities. This includes working closely with Elon University’s Campus Recreation and local associations that offer intramurals open to Elon Law students. This committee shall ensure that intramurals should be open to all members of the student body.
Leadership at Elon by Advising First-Year Students (L.E.A.F.S.) Committee – Lauren Murphree, SBA Vice-President - E-Mail; Brian Baker, Head 3L LEAF - E-Mail; Whitney Perry, Head 2L LEAF – E-Mail
The Leadership at Elon by Advising First-Year Students (L.E.A.F.S.) Program exists in order to support first year law students by establishing a relationship between new students and upperclassmen that advise and assist students during their first year.
Social Committee – Mark Jetton – E-Mail
Shall be in charge of all SBA sponsored social events. A central goal of this committee should be to offer a wide array of social events for the student body. This includes social events that are appropriate for all segments of the student body.
